Art Showcase 2022

Art Showcase 2022

Recently, two talented art students in Ms. Ritchie’s art classes created fabric murals as a generous donation for our local Food Pantry. Milani Giovacchino and Gia Tirino were responsible for the creation of these fabric murals which are on display. Each student designed, sewed, and painted the murals, which are real showstoppers. Wall murals are intricate large scale pieces that let you make a major statement.

For both girls, it was their first time using a sewing machine so these murals reflect a tremendous accomplishment on a totally independent project. As Mrs. Ritchie pointed out when reflecting on it, we couldn’t be more proud of these unassuming students.

In addition to the great work Milani and Gia are doing, the art students have been working all year and this week, the art show is up in the foyer outside the cafeteria. Students spend the year developing their skills in topics such as painting where they learn the difference between tempera and watercolor painting, such as how watercolor paints are semi-translucent and thin in texture. They work best on thin surfaces, like paper. Tempera paints are bold and thick. They will adhere to a variety of surfaces and work well on heftier materials such as poster board or wood. They also worked on colored pencil drawings, which are perfect for fine lines and detailed work; and they made pastel still lifes, which pastel pencils are made of pure pigment with a binder which creates a more vibrant color.

Students also studied collagraph printing, calligraphy, mosaics and even sculpture, the last of which can be seen in the showcase on the third floor.
