Welcome Back!

Welcome back to the Plymouth Public Schools Newspaper! We are off to a great start for this year. There will be a lot in store for this fall and new school year, which can be found below. Stay tuned for more updates, as we will be periodically adding new articles to the website.

Spectacular Fall Events:

Does the thought of dressing up in costumes for Halloween get you through October? Have you always wanted to break out a snazzy group costume but couldn’t coordinate your friends to go out trick-or-treating together? Terryville High School’s Spirit Week can help you achieve all of your dreams before Halloween even starts! This classic tradition is a great way for students to express themselves creatively and to celebrate what it means to be a THS student. Spirit Week leads up to a pep rally which usually includes games, a crowd-thrilling powderpuff dance, and other surprises!

This year’s themes are as follows:

  • Monday, October 22nd: ‘Merica Monday (previously called “USA Day”)
  • Tuesday, October 23rd: Twin Tuesday
  • Wednesday, October 24th: Character Day Wednesday
  • Thursday, October 25th: Tropical Thursday
  • Friday, October 26th: Class Color Wars & Pep Rally
    • In preparation for the pep rally, wear your grade’s colors:
      • Freshmen: White
      • Sophomores: Gray
      • Juniors: Orange
      • Seniors: Black

Homecoming is right around the corner, and this year’s theme for the dance is Around the World. It will be taking place on November 3rd in the cafe. It will be from 7 pm to 10 pm. The tickets will start to be sold to students two weeks prior to the event during lunch waves, and they will cost $20 per ticket.

Finally, students and families from the Terryville community participated in the “Out of the Darkness” Suicide Prevention Walk on October 14th at Rockwell Park. The 36 participants from Terryville that attended included current and former students, teachers, and parents, and was the largest group represented at the event. Mrs. Jobbagy and Mr. Nave organized the event, and Ms. Aronheim, Mrs. Luba and Mrs. Johnson were present to support this cause.

Outstanding Clubs:

Creative Writing Club is pleased to announce that we will be putting out a creative writing compilation, set to appear in the December issue of the Plymouth Public Schools Newspaper! Students will submit their creative writing, and Creative Writing Club members will select pieces to appear in our little corner of the news world! Wouldn’t it be great to graduate high school and be able to say you’ve been published? News to come regarding piece submission!

Also new to this year is the Terryville High School Firefighter Club. Mr. Fuller, THS’s new woodshop teacher is to thank for this interesting upcoming club and welcomes anyone who is interested in firefighting/fire service to join.  The first meeting will be held during FLEX on Thursday, Oct 25th in Mr. Fuller’s room (224), so if you are interested, come to check it out!

The Yearbook Club is a great way to meet new friends and express yourself creatively. Students can collaborate with other on layouts, colors, and designs, and add their input to the final product. Each student’s contribution to the yearbook can be seen when the yearbook arrives in June! As for yearbook photos, the last day to take Senior photos is on October 31st. Also, all clubs and the Senior class photos must be taken by October 31st. Finally, superlatives are due by November 1st. If anyone wants a Senior quote or a baby picture, make sure those are submitted by November 29th.

New Classes:

Our inaugural year of AP US Government & Politics has gotten off to a great start. We have covered the Constitutional underpinnings, focusing specifically on the intent of our founding fathers in forming a Constitution that was far superior to the Articles. We have integrated current events into the course, and look forward to integrating the upcoming 2018 Midterm Elections as we move into our next chapter on Congress.

The first year of the senior class History Through Film is off to a resounding start.  Formerly a half year class, History Through Film is delving into the concept of injustices in society and how they have been handled.  So far, the class has watched the films Iron Jawed Angels, Inherit the Wind, and Grapes of Wrath then discussed their morals.
