THS’s Pep Rally: A Thriller of a Good Time

Katie Keegan

The annual October pep rally was an extremely exciting event with many activities and spectacles. From Paper Mummies to Thriller dance moves, the pep rally was a great way to end an exhilarating Spirit Week. In the days leading up to the pep rally, students got in the spirit with Jersey Day, Work from Home day, Superhero Day, and Decades Day, and we even included a Halloween day this year where students could dress up in Halloween garb to celebrate.

Students were called down on Halloween day last period to celebrate our students’ sports teams and get us excited about our final home games and the Homecoming Dance.

Our pep rally has a familiar pattern, even now, post-Covid.

  1. Students come into the gym and sit by grade in the bleachers.
  2. Athletes are introduced by running into the center of the gym
  3. Fun activities ensue. This year, we tried our hand at toilet paper mummies
  4. This is typically followed by a fake-out. This year, they pretended to set up musical chairs
  5. We had a big surprise where several teachers and our pep club danced to Michael Jackson’s hit song Thriller
  6. We close out with our amazing Color guard routine and very impressive drumline

The beginning of the pep rally is always a bit chaotic but always exciting. The athletes run through a sheet of paper by sport and then stand and wait for the seniors to be recognized. After the athletes return to their section; activities begin, we started with mummy wrapping.

Every section selects a victim, I mean volunteer, to be wrapped in toilet paper by their peers, then the competition begins. Each grade begins rapidly wrapping its victim. After a minute the mummies were then judged and the seniors destroyed the competition with having the best-wrapped mummy.

After they put out chairs in a way that made it seem like they were going to play musical chairs, the pep club, and staff instead danced to the hit song Thriller by Michael Jackson. This came as a surprise, but they were able to successfully surprise the attendees with their amazing dancing performance. The choreography was extremely successful and the group was in sync

After the Thriller dance spectacle, the color guard performed their routine and did an excellent job. They had choreographed a dance that was sync and highlighted some of their best dance skills.  After the color guard performed the drumline came out, this is one of the more popular events in the pep rally.

The drumline stands in front of each of the grades section then whoever cheers the loudest wins. The drumline does an excellent job and plays very well during this performance. We started with the freshmen, they were a bit confused but eventually understood what was happening and started cheering. The other grades had shunned the freshmen and were quite proud of it including some of the freshmen who shunned their class. Next were the sophomores, they cheered but not loud enough that we could barely hear them, and all the grades shunned the sophomores including the clueless freshman. Next were the juniors who had a lot of energy, they were also shunned. Last were the Seniors who had the most energy and won, they were dancing, yelling and clapping which created a huge echo in the gym. After everything was finished it was time for us to leave, the seniors were let out early and everyone followed after. Overall, the pep rally was extremely successful and everyone had a great time.
